A few firsts and a slice of cake.
This week the girlie said Mama mumumumumum for the first time. I nearly cried. I made her repeat it a few times just so i was sure. I am not entirely sure she knows exactly what it means. But it sure beats hearing Da Da all the time.
The other first for me was teaching myself to knit. Yeah yeah i am an old grannie right!!!? Well if its good enough for Julia Roberts, its good enough for me!.
I just got to a point when i was thinking ‘ why doesnt the boys Mum make some new jumpers for the girl’. It seems that she has been to busy in Ethiopia knitting cardigans for dolls. Well!
So i thought if i could knit i would just make loads of stuff for her. So i am.
Obviously i am starting off so i dont want to get ahead of myself. The first project is a blanket for the girl for Christmas. The pattern is really for a checked one but i prefer stripes so that is what i am doing. I am thinking of putting her initials on there as well but i will see how i do. I dont want to run before i can walk.
I am finding knitting very therapeutic and i have quite happy to sit in my nursing chair knitting away whilst the tele is on.
I will keep you updated on my progress. But dont expect me to be speedy as its slow starting.
I feel i have caught the winter cold. My throat is scratchy and i seem to have a constant headache. Last night i was very restless not being able to get comfy and sleep. I just hope that i dont pass it onto the girl as she is already a little grizzly with the teething. ALthough she is ever such a poppet.
Yesterday we had my postnatal friends around for tea and cake. I made a coffee and walnut and a lemon and cherry cake. Both went down a storm.
I find our group really nice. A random selection of women thrown together because of having a baby.
I do look at them all and have a ponder though. It is plainly clear to me that they have all come from high powered jobs, live quite happily with quite a bit of money. Thier babies have the best of the best.
As for me, i am the only one who ever bakes a cake, does arty things and doesnt spend stupid amounts of money on things that i dont need. I am happy to have hand me downs, use what i find, search on freecycle for things and buy on ebay. The girl wants for nothing and is always looking very cute in her outfit of the day.
I just hope that my little one grows up like me, appreciating the smaller things in life, learning to draw, knit and make things that she needs rather than going out and buying them.
Dont get me wrong. I love my baby friends. It just makes me have a little smile inside when they appreciate a home made cake so much when buying a cake is something i would never dream of doing.

hmmm…I know what you mean. My mom always did most of the things at home. She baked cakes, she made ice creams and also tomato sauce. She tried to make us interested in all that. But after you come home after work, all you want to do is eat and go to sleep. But then we do appreciate all things homemade.
Your girl is lucky
Pretty! I can crochet but never learned to knit. Good for you!
If you get bored, I could do with a scarf for the winter…
Hey Vi…. you will be surprised at what you probably learnt from your mum. It will come in handy when you need it.
Gina – I wouldnt even know where to start when it comes to crochet. Maybe that will be my next challenge.
Huwie… haha. Get in line. Mind you it might be winter 2012 by the time i get it to you. xx
It’s great that you’re taking so well to knitting! I tried it and was an Utter Failure. Of course, I don’t have a motivator like your sweetie pie daughter
Looking forward seeing all the cool stuff you make!
I wish i could knit, my nan taught me once but i don’t have the patience really and now no one to teach me
I’m the same as you, I think we learn at an early age from our parents that the best doesn’t have to have a designer lable on it! In most cases, they could never afford it anyway… Good values Fabu. That is what your girl will have.
)
Knitting! I can’t but I love the colours you have there! I want candy now! xx
Hey nikki. I am not sure i am taking that well to it. I find my casting on rather messy. ugh. Its irritating me actually as i am a bit of a perfectionist.
I guess practice makes perfect.
Hey pinky. They have some excellent videos on the web on showing you how to knit. And its something really nice to do whilst watching tv.
Hey Daffy. I hope so. I hope that she grows up wanting to learn cool stuff and not be materialistic.
I thought that they were candy cane colours too. haha.
I am turning into my grandma with regard to domestic life. Although i come from a legacy of feisty domestic goddesses i can hear my grandma with me every day. she read the blog entry with me just now and i heard her bellow ‘SHOP BOUGHT CAKES!!!!! HOW EXTRAVAGENT!!! CANT THEY MAKE THEM AT HOME……DID THEIR MOTHERS TEACH THEM NOTHING!!!’ and so on. You get the idea. I’m not as au fait at ckaes and the like as you but i am getting there. I also tend to make sniffing noises and say ‘hmm yes, could make that at home’ quite alot.
re freecycle and ebay. I have a struggle with Shep about stuff like this. He will accept books and dvds second hand but thats about it. I’m working on it though and once we have a weenie he will have no choice!!
Hey Tan. How funny your Grandma is. Obviously never heard of in her genaration. I guess it must be a genaration thing that has been passed down.
Hey you… doing baking is great and i am no wizz at it. It takes practice and then when i think i have it mastered.. it all goes wrong. I think the making of the thing is just as enjoyable as eating it at the end.
A lot of things change when you have a weenie. You realise you need a LOT of things and your right.. shep will have no choice.
He might find it find doing up old stuff for the weenies though and painting it all pretty. Its amazing what you find second hand these days. x
fabs – i love reinventing things. before i moved here and was in charge of everything homewise i did tons of stripping, painting and fixing up in general. i like nothing more than car boots, junk shops and reclamation places. heaven!! i will teach him good…..im starting with a car boot sale next week. he agreed to it because he has never been to one, not one – ever!! and he is 37 years old.
Wow never been to a booty. Thats mad. You find some excellent things at a booty. I wouldnt recommend doing one with him yet though as getting up at 6 getting there and people trying to get things out your car before you have even had a coffee is pretty scary.
You sound like you got a real passion for reinventing which is ace. I like that too but never get around to being able to do things and having the space.
Bet your house is ace.
he he my house was ace – the present show flat is well, exactly that but when we move out of here things will change he he xx
You know what though as you move on you pick up more and more ideas so your final resting place will be a work of art. I cant wait to move to decorate the way i want to have my house. Our house now is ok but its not the style i want.
I have some knitting trivia which I must share.
Tom Baker’s Doctor Who wore a very long scarf. The woman tasked with knitting said scarf was sent a large amount of wool to knit it and thought that she had to use the whole lot. Hence the very long scarf.
I always wanted one of those scarves when I was a kid.
I’ve been able to knit since I was very young; nothing complex – I can cast on, I can knit… I just can’t cast off; so I end up with huge, long things that very quickly unravel as soon as I think “I’m finished!” Doh!
I know what you mean about hearing the girl go “mumumumum” for the first time; I remember when I first heard mine identify me with something (and then, later her baby sister identifying me as “Noah” … actually, saying that, my sister’s youngest has taken to calling all the men she sees my name – I must have made a lasting impression last time I saw her
)
Mr Frog – I remember that bit of trivia; when I was younger I had a plasticine “make a picture” which was of Tom Baker being chased by Daleks – and lasted for many, many years (I think it’s only in recent times and many moves that it’s gotten lost somewhere); Whenever I started knitting, I would always try and make one of those scarves. It always went well until I came to casting off (as I previously said; sometimes it’s surprising _how much_ wool is used !!)
Wakeupscared. What do you find hard with the casting off?. That was the only bit i didnt need help with. Well done though for knitting for some long. I am aiming to make some presents for nieces for Christmas but i am not sure i am going to be able to .
I don’t know what it is about casting off … I suspect I was never really shown how to do it… …and then I think, like a man lost, I’m sure I can work it out and don’t stop and ask for directions… it’s been a while since I last knit – but I always remember that feeling of “I’m casting off, it’s working, it’s working, its… unravelling… no! aaaggghh! bugger. Let’s start again”
haha. Oh dear.
A scientist once went with his wife to a knitting bee. He watched, intrigued, as the fingers of the ladies flew between the needles. On returning home with his wife, he commented that he felt sure that there was another way of handling the needles and moving the wool. Seeking the approval of his wife, he described it in great detail. His wife listened carefully and then gently said ‘That’s called purl, my dear!’
Hehe thats brilliant. Bet the woman just rolled her eyes and had a little giggle to herself.
